Admission Requirements

Meeting the admissions requirements means you have the foundation, experience, and ability to succeed in our rigorous programs and rise to the next level of success. Please note that program requirements vary.

Online MBA Program Requirements

Candidates for the Online MBA program must have at least 2 years of postgraduate professional experience.

  • Undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA is recommended but not required.

The GMAT is required for the Online MBA (school code 5297). 

In lieu of GMAT test scores, applicants can also complete the affordable, 100% online and on-demand Business Fundamentals Course Bundle available through the Graduate Management Admissions CouncilTM. A non-standardized test option to meet application requirements while also gaining confidence and preparing for the rigors of business school.

Current resume or CV detailing all previous work experience.

Applicants should provide a personal statement describing the uniqueness of their character and abilities; their experiences with issues of diversity; and their academic, community service, and career history. Additionally, the statement should discuss the applicant’s interest in the Howard University Online MBA program and how completing the Online MBA will facilitate realizing their dreams and aspirations. The statement should be between 2-3 pages and double-spaced.

Two letters of recommendation that address intellectual and personal capabilities.

Topics should cover personal integrity, ability to work with others, leadership qualities, oral and written communication skills, and community involvement. Recommendations may come from a supervisor, a member of academia, a mentor, and/or someone who can attest to these capabilities.

Each recommender must sign and upload their letter on official letterhead through the application website or email it as a PDF attachment. We will not accept letters provided by the applicant.

Official transcripts are required from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended, including schools where you did not earn a degree. You can provide unofficial transcripts for the application process, however, official transcripts must be provided if admitted to the program.

Transcripts may be delivered electronically (preferred). To be considered official, they must be sent through the National Student Clearinghouse or delivered through a secure University Office of the Registrar system. Please do not select Howard from the dropdown and manually enter onlinebusiness@howard.edu.

Applicants may transfer a maximum of six graduate semester hours from other programs that are accredited by the AACSB-International Association for Management Education provided the courses to be transferred were not used to satisfy requirements for another degree. Note, only those courses in which a grade of B or higher was earned will be considered for transfer credit.

Online Executive MBA Program Requirements

Candidates for the EMBA program must have at least 7 years of postgraduate professional experience and 5 or more years of management/leadership experience. Must be comfortable with the basic concepts of business, able to show progressive experience on a resume, and ready to transition into a position that is at, or the equivalent of, a C-Suite level role.

  • Undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA is recommended but not required.

The GMAT or Executive Assessment is optional but highly recommended. Applicants with an undergraduate GPA lower than a 2.5 are required to take the Executive Assessment (school code 5297).

Current resume or CV detailing all previous work experience.

Applicants should provide a 3-5 page personal statement describing the uniqueness of their character, abilities, understanding of issues of diversity, academic history, community service activities, and professional experience by answering prompts focused on executive leadership.

Two letters of recommendation that address your intellectual and personal capabilities.

Letters should cover personal integrity, ability to work with others, leadership qualities, oral and written communication skills, and/or community involvement. Recommendation letters should be professional and may come from a supervisor, a member of academia, a mentor, and/or someone who can attest to these capabilities.

We do not accept transfer credits for the Executive MBA program.

International Applicants

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results for international students for whom English is not their native language should be forwarded from the Education Testing Service.

  • A score of 550 on the paper-based test (PBT)
  • A score of 79 on the internet-based test (iBT)
  • In place of the TOEFL (if not offered in your country), applicants may submit results from the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of 6.5.
